Privacy
Ned Maps collects as little as it can. The whole map works without signing in.
- Location. If you allow it, your location is used in your browser to center the map and rank nearby lakes. The near-me feature does not send your location to our server.
- Accounts. Signing in is optional, with Google or with a code sent to your email. If you sign in, we store your email address (and, with Google, the name, profile picture and account id Google's sign-in returns), when you joined and when you were last seen. That is what carries your favorites, trips and saved plans between your devices. Anything you post to a lake board is public and shows your name and picture.
- Trips and catches. What you log is stored on your device (browser storage). If you use trip tracking or share a trip, that trip's data (including catch locations, any photos you attach to a catch, and any breadcrumb trail you enabled) is stored on our server so the link works and your trip survives.
- Email. If you are signed in, we email you when someone replies to your post, reacts to it, or posts about a lake you favorited. Every one of those emails carries an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing stops all of them.
- Analytics. We use Google Analytics and PostHog to see aggregate traffic (which pages, how many visitors). The site carries no ad network, builds no ad profiles and sells no ads.
- Gear links. Some links go to Amazon and are marked as affiliate links; Amazon knows only that a visitor clicked.
- Deleting. Clearing your browser's site data removes everything stored on your device. To delete your account, or to remove a shared trip from the server, use the contact address on the About page.
ChatGPT plugin
If you use the Ned Maps plugin in ChatGPT:
- What we receive. Only what a tool needs to answer: the lake, species, date and number of spots you asked about, or the lake name, county, town, species and distance for a lake search. ChatGPT sends these from OpenAI's servers, so we don't receive your conversation, your name, your email or your device's location. The plugin needs no account.
- Why. To look up the lake and rank its spots. We don't use these requests for advertising or build profiles from them. Links in the answers carry a tag (utm_source=chatgpt) so our site analytics can count visits that came from the plugin.
- Who else. Cloudflare hosts Ned Maps and handles each request. When ChatGPT shows the plugin's map, your browser loads satellite imagery from Esri and the lake's depth map from nedmaps.com, like any web page. If you open a link from an answer, you're on nedmaps.com and the rest of this page applies.
- How long. Cloudflare keeps a log of each request, such as the address requested and the time, for up to 7 days. Answers are cached by lake, species and date for up to a day so repeat questions load faster; cached answers contain no personal data.
- Your choices. You can disconnect the plugin in ChatGPT's settings at any time. There is no plugin account to delete. Questions go to the contact address on the About page.
